Leading up to the interview:

  • Research into the University

    • Are there any societies that interest you? Do you know any current students who can tell you about student life?

  • Attend the open days

    • These days are great to explore the university and the city. They will help you get a feel of the university and allow you to speak to many of the current students.

  • Know the requirements

    • You must carefully read the updated entry requirements to make sure you have ticked all the boxes! This will maximise your chances of getting in.

  • Research that dental school

    • Carry out research specifically into the dental department. What is their teaching style? What do they have to offer that interests you? Are they renowned for any particular research? What sets them apart from other universities - do they have smaller class size? Are their outreach centres close to the university?

  • Ask questions beforehand

    • Email your prospective universities to ask them any questions you have. If you are unsure about anything, it is always best to ask. You will be spending four or five years of you time there so make sure it is the right choice for you.

  • Know what is expected of a dental student

    • Applicants should have a good understanding of the values, characteristics and traits expected of a prospective dental student. Understanding the NHS core values, GDC standards and the behaviour exhibited by dental professionals are key.

  • Know your personal statement inside out

    • Universities may ask you questions relating to your statement and query anything you have mentioned. It is important it has been written by you and is truthful as they can pick up on this at interview.

  • Research topics related to dentistry.

    • Examples include the process of tooth decay, water fluoridation, sugar tax, (as well as current event such as COVID-19).

  • Don’t regurgitate an answer

    • Prepare major bullet points which will form your answers rather than a pre-written script - universities do not want robotic, rehearsed answers.

  • Be organised

    • Carefully read any communication from the university regarding where the interview is, they may offer advice on how to prepare, the dress code, and the structure of the interview.

  • Practice and perfect

    • Be sure to practice common interview questions/scenarios out loud or even with someone too - you may be surprised at how many times you use fillers such as ‘like’ and ‘um’.

  • Plan your transport

    • Although obvious you should know your route to the interview.  Aim to get there early with plenty of time in case you get lost or there is traffic.

  • Look smart

    • Find something formal to wear, you want to look professional, to make a good first impression.

The night before:

  • Make sure all your documents are in place for the day and keep them safe in a folder or poly-pocket.

  • Make sure your clothes are clean and ironed, and your shoes are polished.

  • Get to bed early and get sufficient rest, remember, you will be well prepared by this point and should remain calm.

  • Make sure you know exactly where you are meant to be and at what time.

  • Set an alarm.
