Competitive Entry for Getting into Dental School
Securing a place to study Dentistry has, for many, been akin to receiving the ‘golden ticket’.
It is, therefore, not surprising that the route to entry exhibits a highly competitive nature. University entry to study Dentistry is one of the most difficult in comparison to other course subjects.
Due to many factors making Dentistry an attractive career, such as job satisfaction, career progression and scope of practice the demand for a training position in the UK is high. With government capping on the numbers of training places in Dentistry (to prevent oversupply of Dentists) there is an even greater competition for each position. As such, entry to study Dentistry is facilitated by competitive selection rather than recruitment.
It is estimated that for every one training post in Dentistry, there are 15 applicants*, in comparison to medicine in which there are four times more available spaces and double the number of medical schools.
Furthermore, candidates are selected, not only, on academic achievements but assessment of motivation, communication, practical skills and values. The process for admission is therefore carefully designed and scrutinised in order to create a universally fair process.
